Year after year, the Transdev Group has been developing mobility.

1955 / 1973 / 1974 / 1977 / 1980-1983 / 1983 / 1988 / 1990 / 1994 / 1997 / 1998 / 1999 / 2000 / 2001 / 2002 / 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006 / 2007 / 2008 / 2009 / 2010

1955

Creation of the Société Centrale pour l'Équipement du Territoire (Scet), subsidiary in charge of development, which was the beginning of the Caisse des Dépôts’ transportation branch.

1973

Creation of the Transport department within the Scet.

1974

Creation of the first AVM transport in Toulouse, the first urban network entrusted to the Scet’s Transport Department.

1977

The cities of Montpellier, Nantes and Orléans work closely with the Scet in order to benefit from their technical supervision.

1980-1983

Start of the first studies in Nantes and Grenoble for the design of major segregated-lane tramway projects.

1983

Creation of the C3D holding (Caisse des Dépôts Développement), which includes all the activities of the Caisse des Dépôts’ operating subsidies, including the Scet.

1988

C3D transforms the transport branch of the Scet into a subsidiary and creates Transcet SA. In July, C3D purchases Progecar, a private group specialising in inter-city transportation.

1990

Creation of the Transdev holding (Société Européenne pour le Développement des Transports Publics) with 99% of its capital belonging to the C3D holding. Transdev manages the passenger transportation department of the Caisse des Dépôts and thus merges all the activities of the Transcet SA and Progecar SA companies and their subsidiaries.

1994

The Caisse des Dépôts, Transcet Association and Transdev sign an agreement protocol entitled “Travelling Better Together” aimed at improving the service in difficult neighbourhoods. Transcet creates Transamo, a subsidiary dedicated to providing works management assistance to local authorities and SEMs, particularly for large projects such as segregated-lane transportation.

1997

First ventures outside of France: In Great Britain, London United is bought in July by Transdev Plc, a British subsidiary wholly owned by Transdev. The Group controls 9% of the London transportation market.

In Portugal, Transdev, through the Normetro consortium, wins the contract resulting from the invitation to tender for the construction and operation of the Porto tramway network (4 lines, 70 km).

1998

On 31st March, the merger of Transcet into Transdev takes effect.

In Great Britain, the ARROW Group composed of ADTRANZ (rolling stock), TARMAC (building and civil engineering works), Transdev and Nottingham City Transport (local operator) is chosen by the British government for the construction, operation and maintenance of the metropolitan Nottingham tramway.

1999

Transdev takes control of the Visual Group, specialised in upmarket tourism.

In Australia, METROLINK, a consortium comprising Transdev, EGIS and TRANSFIELD, an Australian public works and maintenance company, are awarded the concession - for 12 years - of the Yarra tramway network (201 tramways, 103 kilometres of double tracks) serving part of metropolitan Melbourne (3.5 million inhabitants).

2000

Inauguration of segregated-lane public transportation projects: Montpellier (1st tram line), Saint-Denis de la Réunion (segregated-lane bus line), Strasbourg (B & C tram lines), Nantes (3rd tram line), Orléans (1st tram line). Transamo, subsidiary dedicated to project supervision, is awarded the management of several new projects: Montpellier (line 2), Orléans (line 2), Mulhouse (tram-train) and Grenoble (line 3).

In Italy, Transdev, associated with the San Paolo IMI Group through its subsidiary SINLOC, creates an Italian subsidiary and successfully bids on two invitations to tender: works management assistance for the Turin tramway (a VAL system) and the operation, as part of a consortium, of part of the Rome bus network (8 million kilometres per year).

2001

Transdev intensifies its quest for quality with the certification of three new networks: Yarra Trams in Melbourne (ISO 14001); Stab in Bayonne (ISO 9001); Sotrader in La Réunion (NF service 298). Transamo is successful in winning a new assistance contract with Le Mans. FINOPI, subsidiary of the Italian bank San Paolo IMI, acquires a 7% stake in Transdev.

In Australia, Transdev continues its expansion with the acquisition of Shorelink, a bus network on the outskirts of Sydney.

2002

Signature of a partnership between the Caisse des Dépôts and the RATP. Beginning in October, the management of the departmental ticketing system in the Isère district is awarded to EquiVal 38, a subsidiary in which RATP Développement and Transdev each hold 50% of the capital. SEMTCAR in Rennes, assisted by Transamo, is the project management assistant for the first metro line inaugurated on 15th March. Transdev creates the Transdev Foundation, which provides financial support to the first seven projects.

In Great Britain, Transdev acquires the Sovereign Buses London Company and becomes the second largest operator in Portugal with the acquisition of the Caima Group, a network servicing Porto, Braga and Coimbra. Inauguration of the first two metro lines in Porto on 7 December.

2003

Transamo is chosen by the Régie des Transports de Marseille (RTM) to assist in the preparation of the operations for the future tramway in Marseille. Orléans witnesses the birth of Setao, Transdev subsidiary, a public transportation company serving metropolitan Orléans.
EuRailCo, a subsidiary equally owned by RATP and Transdev takes its place in the German regional railway market. Transdev acquires Atcrb coaches in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

2004

With the acquisition of the whole Melbourne network (490 trams and 242 kilometres of tracks), Transdev becomes the world leader in tramway network management. The same year, Transdev launches the Nottingham tramway.
Equival, (a service company, subsidiary of RATP Développement and Transdev), specialising in inter-modal mobility, successfully responds to the invitation to tender for the management of the Rennes bus station.

2005

The Transdev Group acquires the Piot Group, one of the main French SMEs in the sector.
Transdev, confirming its European development, consolidates its position in Italy. In Genoa, it is the first time that a major Italian city entrusts the management of its public transport network (bus, metro, etc.) to a private partner via an open tender process. Transdev acquires 41% of the capital in AMT S.P.A (Azienda Mobilita e Trasporti), the network’s operating company (turnover of 150 million euros per year). In Milan, Transdev progressively acquires the AGI Group, a private suburban and interurban transportation company, ranked 3rd in Italy in terms of total revenue (€30 million).
In Great Britain, Transdev acquires Bournemouth Transport Ltd (BTL), with total revenue of €18 million.

2006

The Trams year
Signature of an exceptional contract: €1.4 billion – over 33 years – to design and build the tramway and to ensure the urban transport management for the City of Reims.
New installations in Albertville, Chartres, Marseille, Moulins, Montauban and Reims.
In France, 4 tram inaugurations : Mulhouse (lines 1 and 2), Grenoble (3rd line), Valenciennes (line 1) and Montpellier (line 2).
Launching of BusWay® in Nantes, an innovative concept and new technology for segregated-lane public transportation.
Thanks to the acquisition of the Sterzenbach group, Transdev has marked its entrance into the German transport market and has confirmed its vocation as an investor for modernised suburban transport. In Madrid, Transdev provides technical assistance for the two new tramway lines in the Spanish capital. In the United Kingdom, Transdev acquires 100% of the Blazefield group, which manages 5 companies operating urban and interurban services in western Yorkshire and Lancashire.

2007

In 2007 the Group reinforced its international stature and established itself in Canada and the Netherlands.

Under the terms of an invitation to tender issued by the Dutch State, the Transdev-BNG consortium (the Dutch bank for local authorities) acquired 66.67% of the capital of Connexxion. The deal was formalised on 12 October 2007, Transdev+Connexxion became the European leader in demand-responsive transport.
The Transdev-Connexxion alliance thereby became the fourth largest private operator of local public transport in Europe, with a fleet of 20,000 vehicles and 41,000 employees.
In the Netherlands, Connexxion has developed recognised expertise in the field of on demand transport. With a turnover of €250 M in 2007 and 4,000 vehicles, Transdev-Connexxion emerged as the European market leader.

In July, Transdev established itself in North America through the acquisition of the Limocar group, an urban and interurban transport company in Quebec. With 4 million passengers a year and a fleet of 320 vehicles, Limocar serves the regions of Montreal, Sherbrooke and Estrie.

Transdev consolidated its foothold in the Alps through the acquisition of Bérard coaches. In England, the Group strengthened its presence in Lancashire through the acquisition of two companies: Blackburn Borough Transport and Northern Blue.

In France, Transdev won an invitation to tender for Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Saint-Brieuc and Vienne, whilst the conurbations of Aurillac, Briançon and Chamonix confirmed their faith in the Group by renewing their contracts.

In Spain, three tram projects were confirmed: Teneriffe (new 12.5 km tramway), Madrid (commissioning of lines T2 and T3) and Murcia (inauguration of an experimental line at the end of April).
In France, new tram lines were created in Strasbourg (E) and Grenoble (D), and the Nantes (line 3), Strasbourg (lines C and D) and Valenciennes (line 1) networks were extended.

In the Ile-de-France, Transdev extended its private transport operations by inaugurating two electric-powered river shuttles on the Saint-Denis canal and by setting up a shuttle service between the centre of Paris and the Parc Astérix.

In Genova, Transdev launched two new services, the trolley bus service and a trial water shuttle, whilst in Chalon-sur-Saône its cycle hire operation, Reflex, proved highly successful.

2008

After a very successful operation in Nantes (France), a new BusWay®, a totally integrated dedicated lane bus concept, has been opened in Maubeuge, France.

In Germany, Transdev and Trans Regio worked hand in hand to develop and launch a new regional rail line, MittelRheinBahn.

In November 2008, a joint-venture between Transdev and Joalto in Portugal turned these two entities into the number 2 public transport operator in Portugal.

In the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht awarded Connexxion the contract for all its public transport for the next eight years.
In March, the province of Zeeland renewed a six years concession to Connexxion.

In April, Transdev inaugurates the Marguerite car-share system in Nantes. In Ile-de-France, the acquisition of Caisse Commune, leader in its market in France, has allowed the Group to offer Parisians an alternative to using their own car.

On 1st January, Transdev Reims became the new operator of the urban transport network for the conurbation of Reims for a term of 34 years.
In June, Transdev takes up the management of the Interval network in Villeneuve-sur-Lot and and offers a new network of 11 lines: 5 main lines and 6 secondary lines for on demand transport.

Transdev creates a joint subsidiary (CTBR) with Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois which allows the Group to operate interurban lines. In Alsace, France, Transdev consolidates its activities by increasing in importance in the mixed equity company SOLEA in Mulhouse. The Group opens the Vilavil Express trans-regional bus route linking the Thionville area with Luxembourg.

 

By acquiring the Espaces group, Transdev reinforces its position of 2nd private operator in Ile-de-France public transport. The Group operates now 550 vehicles with 900 employees in the public transport, tourism and on demand transport domains.

In Alsace, France, Transdev acquires Autocars Martinken.
The Group establishes itself in the Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence areas by taking over Autocars Bremond.

The urban transport network of Grand Chalon is being fitted with Visiotrans, an operating and passenger information support system.

2009

At the beginning of the summer, the planned merger between Transdev and Veolia Transport is announced.

In France, the public service delegation of Nantes and Montpellier are renewed and the Group continues to develop its offer of ‘green modes’: two new bike management contracts in Avignon and Valence, new car sharing stations in Ile-de-France; car pooling services in Saône-et-Loire and in Haute-Vienne.

On the market of tramway operations, the network of Tenerife has inaugurated a second line.

Transdev strengthens its international positions with acquisitions in Canada (Auger Group), in Germany (VWS Siegen Company) and in Portugal (takeover of Internorte Group).

2010

At the end of May 2010, Transdev wins the operating and maintenance contract of the future tramway of Rabat-Salé (Morocco).

In June 2010, Transdev inaugurates the first HQE®-compliant Technical Operations Centre for passenger transport vehicles at Val d’Europe

In February 2010, Transdev launches Citizenn.com, the first car sharing service in Porto.

In February 2010, Metropolitan Area Montpellier and Transdev launch - for the first time in an urban transport network in Europe - a USB-key used as a transport ticket and rechargeable via the Internet.
