Playing the Role of a Leader in Sustainable Development
_____Transdev: a leader has emerged who is committed to the life of the city. Its growth strategy is in line with its approach for good corporate citizenship, being attentive to social interests and respectful of the environment.
To sustain its development ambitions, Transdev relies on three main strategic principles: a close relationship with local authorities, high standards of quality and expertise in the tramway operation market; all of these make Transdev a world leader in this field.
One of the First to Sign the IUPT Charter
Thanks to an ambitious innovation policy, the Group signed the International Union of Public Transport’s (IUPT) Charter on Sustainable Development, in 2003. Since its creation, the Group has given great importance to the work that has been accomplished and established reporting on the financial, social and environmental performance. It is committed to proposing sustainable, tailor-made mobility solutions to local communities, attractive offers that improve the life of passengers.
Adhering to the UN Global Compact
Transdev has adhered to the UN Global Compact since 2003. This Compact is designed to enable everyone on the planet to benefit from globalisation by ensuring that global markets operate according to practices and values that are indispensable in serving social and economic needs.
Playing the Partnership Card with Local Authorities
Giving priority to travel within the city is one of the missions shared by all the elected officials. Transdev pursues this same objective and possesses the know-how and undeniable experience in this field. Conscious of this convergence, Transdev has made the strategic choice to pursue consultation and partnership with the local authorities. This can especially be seen with regard to the extent of the proposals.
Acting with a Public Service Mandate
Transdev proposed contract formats that vary widely and offer great flexibility in terms of responsibility, stock ownership and organisation. Shareholder of 28 Public-private partnership, Transdev took over the operational management and technical assistance. Pertaining to the local autorities' expectations, Transdev has been able to implement innovative solutions for public-private partnership, through the creation of a subsidiary.
Being a Benchmark for Financial Performance
Two stellar examples: Genoa and Bournemouth.
In early 2006, we attracted considerable attention when we proposed that the Bournemouth Borough Council retain a stake in the city’s privatised transport company. This groundbreaking type of arrangement not only helped win the tender, but also opened a wide range of opportunities.
In Genoa, the Municipal Corporation demonstrated strict requirements: the operator who won the contract received a management delegation for 6 years, needed to commit to a business turnaround plan and take over 41% of the Genoa transport society’s capital. Transdev, who won this contract at the end of 2005, has demonstrated its ability for managing such a public-private partnership scenario: the quality of service and financial balance have considerably improved.

Retaining its Innovative Lead with Regards to Public Transport: Trans.Cité
The Trans.Cité Association is a think-tank that gathers together elected officials and transport technicians who are associated with Transdev. It constitutes an occasion for very productive dialogue, concerning the vision, as well as the stakes of public transport, in addition to the experiences and initiatives taken locally in this field. Composed of 70 members, Trans.Cité will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2011.
Offering Accessibility to All
Public transport is part of the life of the city. Sometimes, however, it represents the only “public” service that is active in various rural neighbourhoods or regions. Transdev claims its role as facilitator at the service of the community: enabling exchanges, opening up various sectors and allowing the population to be more mobile.
Buses, metros and tramways must be accessible by all. Accessibility appears as a priority in Transdev’s service proposal. A determining criterion of the BusWay© label, accessibility is guaranteed for vehicles (ramps, low floor height and the bus’ lowering suspension) as well as for the stations (adapted platforms, specific layouts, etc.) or information (visual, high sounding, adapted...). In this way, everything is implemented to facilitate wheelchair access and access with a pushchair or luggage.
Accessibility also means to provide adapted services. In Marseilles, for example, Handi'Lib, a specialized subsidiary, organizes transport for mobility-impaired people in the Marseilles Provence Metropolis.
